マルセル･プルースト著『失われた時を求めて - A la recherche du temps perdu』「第1章スワン家のほうへ」の冒頭にマドレーヌをお茶に浸して食べたことから過去の記憶が一気によみがえるというエピソードが紹介されている。

プルーストによると、記憶には「意志の記憶」と「無意志の記憶」がある。「意志の記憶」とは想起することによって蘇る記憶のことで、昨日の夜に食べたものや、幼い頃に見た映画、学校で覚えた歴史の年号だったりする。これらは知性によって切り取られた体験の断片であり、いま身のまわりにあるものとは違って、過去に属している。私たちは思いを巡らすことでこの記憶にアクセスできるが、それはやがてまた、過去へと消えていく。

これに対して「無意志の記憶」は突然向こうからやってくる記憶のことで、味や匂いといった感覚的なものがそのきっかけとなる。「無意志の記憶」の特徴は、それが「死んだ過去」ではなく、「生きた思い出」として立ち現れるということだろう。なぜなら、味や匂いといった感覚は、言葉や映像に比べると曖昧ではあるが、いま生きているこの身体に生じるものだからだ。つまり、「無意志の記憶」とは知性のはたらきによって振り返るものではなく、感覚を引き金として「これから」語られる物語なのだと思う。

この「無意志の記憶」を呼び覚ます感覚として、プルーストは味やにおいに加えて音（音楽）をあげている。

We can access this memory by pondering it, but it will soon disappear into the past.

On the other hand, "involuntary memory" is a memory that suddenly comes from the other side, and is triggered by sensuous things such as taste and smell. The characteristic of "involuntary memory" is that it appears as "living memories" rather than "dead past". This is because the senses of taste and smell are vague compared to words and images, but they occur in this living body. In other words, I think that "memory of unwillingness" is not something that is reflected by the function of intelligence, but a story that is told "from now on" triggered by the senses.

As a sensation to awaken this "memory of unwillingness", Proust gives sound (music) in addition to taste and smell.

インターネットの発達により、私たちは瞬時に膨大な「記憶」へとアクセスできるようになった。忘れてしまった映画俳優の名前は検索すればいいし、去年の桜が見たければ写真アプリを開けばいい。しかし、それらは「意志的な記憶」である。

技術が、科学が、AIがどれほど進化しようと、「無意志の記憶」を想起させることはできない。なぜならそれは、知性ではなく感覚によって個々の身体に記録された、ただ一度きりの体験だからだ。私たちの身体は無意識のうちにすべての「とき」を記憶し、それと共に「いま」を生きているのだ。

私たちは、音と香りを閉じ込めた箱を作った。カバーには暗闇で踊る少女の絵を添えた。
この箱を空けた、その続きの物語を見てみたい。誰かの潜在的な記憶の中にアクセスできれば、私たちとプルーストとの実験も続いていくだろう。

With the development of the Internet, we have instant access to vast amounts of "memory." I want to see the continuation of the story that emptied this box. If we have access to someone's potential memory, we will continue to experiment with Proust.

サックス奏者として活動後、ピアノ調律を吉田哲氏に師事。音の調律から観る様々な音との対話方法を伝える『音のワークショップ』を開催。楽器製作家、安達正浩氏の教えのもと、14世紀に考案されたクラヴィーコード (鍵盤楽器) を製作。自ら楽器を作り、音を調律し、音楽家であること。この流れを大事にして世界を観たいと思っている。

While learning from Mr. Masahiro Adachi, instrumental producer, started to create Clavichord (keyboard instrument), invented in the 14th century.

This flow is essential for me to see the world.
